Sempervirens

San Carlos, California : : 2020

While going through a full renovation of their San Carlos home, our clients reached out for assistance with their vision of a landscape that reflected their love of nature and being outside.

We worked together to create a garden with a diverse arrangement of spaces for gathering, hidden nooks for quiet reflection, and a goal of attracting as much wildlife as we could accommodate on the small lot.

Two large Redwood trees provide a dramatic anchor and set the tone of the backyard.  Extending from the main living space a deck branches along the rear and out to a casual seating area set around a firepit.  Steps on either side lead to either a shady dining area under the Redwoods or a native grass meadow.  Integrated lighting creates a variety of options for setting the mood after sunset.

Out front a cedar fence pulls the design language of the home around the entry garden for a sense of separation from the street.  An enlarged porch allows for a more open and welcoming path into the home and room for a future seating area.  A seat boulder greets visitors from the main entry gate.  Citrus and a small vegetable garden provide a few essentials, while vibrant native planting throughout attracts hummingbirds, bees and beneficial insects.

Redwood’s latin name of sempervirens means “always flourishing”, which we’re sure this garden will for a long time to come.
