San Francisco, California : : 2021

Having relocated to San Francisco from Hawaii some years before, our clients were seeking to transform a barely usable sloping backyard into something special that evoked the spirit of the Islands.

Utilizing the existing tree canopy, the vision was to set an elevated platform into and under this green veil.  Cozy for two yet accommodating for ten, a firepit and sectional sofa anchor the heart of the space.  Three dramatic tree ferns enhance the tropical feeling, a ground layer of mostly California native plants contribute to the lush forest vibes.

Down below an outdoor dining space nestles between the home and an existing retaining wall repurposed as wood seating. A built-in outdoor kitchen and grill completes the lower terrace area.

Volcanic stone was chosen for the paving and walls, honoring the origin and ongoing creation of the Hawaiian Islands. Thermally modified lumber surfaces the deck as a sustainable alternative to tropical hardwoods.  An adjustable color lighting system allows the vibe to suit any occasion.  The clients furnished a few special elements to complete the space.

The garden is a foundation for daily life, functioning as a restorative retreat, a space for fun, and a place for remembering home.
