With an unusable sloped area at the rear of their property, our clients asked for a new space that would beckon them to make the journey.
We began by locating a raised deck to capture the best views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Marin Headlands beyond. An asymmetrical deck design breaks alignment with adjacent fence lines, allowing the structure to stand alone and take on a sculptural form. A firepit and heated concrete benches were both employed to provide sufficient warmth for chilly sunsets. A path with timber steps winds through coast chaparral plantings which provide habitat for native pollinators and insects.
Shooting hoops being a daily routine for one of our clients, the existing court was kept in place and faced with bluestone. By relocating a formidable existing staircase, a more inviting transition between the upper and lower spaces was created, as well as space for an adjacent sitting area.
A modern side gate enhances privacy from the street while integrating existing brick columns. Out front rustic basalt pavers mix with sidewalk and entry plantings to round out the garden.
