After renovating their home this family of four was ready for a garden to bring them together outdoors.  The goal was a simple, focused layout with a few touches of color to marry the aesthetics of the two clients.

A corten steel firepit ringed with Adirondack style lounges anchors the space. An outdoor grill area is adorned with bright Heath dual glaze tile, inspired by textiles from their home decor.  Timber stepping pads bring a weathered coastal feel to the garden, while a reclaimed redwood beam adds seating for larger gatherings. A stepping stump pathway invites a meander.

Plantings are composed of locally native species, chosen to bring habitat and wildlife into the garden. An apple tree joins an existing lemon for a few edibles, and terra cotta pots overflow with herbs for the kitchen.

In lieu of a traditional irrigation system, the clients embraced a disciplined planting design suited to the site that needs almost no supplemental water. For the occasional hot summer day, in-ground quick couplers give easy hose access at several points in the garden.

The result is a garden with all the slow, lazy beach vibes needed to keep any gathering lingering long into the foggy sunset …
